A bit sad that I have failed to cycle Land’s End to John O’Groats but I hope that by taking the train today I give myself the best options to rescue the ride given inflexible accommodation plans.
I felt well enough to have a small breakfast before leaving the hotel. It was only today, on leaving the hotel, that I noticed perhaps the wonkiest bannisters I can recall.
It was a short walk to the train station in Nantwich and there were a set of connections starting with a 9:17am train the did not require advance bicycle reservations. The trains all worked fine and it was fun to go through Manchester Piccadilly, a station I traveled from many times while I was studying at Manchester University.
It was about 7 miles of quite level terrain from the Wannington railway station to my lovely little accommodation in Kirby Lonsdale. I was sad to find that I felt very weak riding those few miles and then had shivers afterwards, not a good sign.
We’ll see how I feel in the morning, the options I’m considering are:
- Ride 7 miles back to Wannington railway station and go home
- Ride forward and if it doesn’t feel good at 40 miles, catch trains home from Penrith
- Ride forward and it feels OK… I like the sound of this one
